A different approach to dementia care

Dementia care is not just about support. It is about understanding, connection and meeting each person where they are.

The Validation Method is a unique approach to dementia care that focuses on empathy and communication. Instead of trying to bring someone back to our reality, this method encourages caregivers to enter theirs, creating moments of comfort, trust and meaningful interaction.

What is the validation method?

The Validation Method is a key part of how dementia care is delivered, focusing on empathy, understanding, and meaningful communication.

This approach teaches caregivers how to listen with intention and ask thoughtful questions that allow individuals with memory loss to express their feelings and concerns. These interactions can help reduce anxiety, ease frustration, and create a greater sense of comfort and connection.

At Country Meadows, Connections team members use the Validation Method to build strong, trusting relationships with residents. By listening actively and engaging in what matters most to each individual, caregivers are able to create more meaningful daily experiences.

The Validation Method was developed from the person-centered care practices of Naomi Feil, who founded the Validation Training Institute in 1982. In 2001, Country Meadows became the first Authorized Validation Organization in the United States, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to this approach.

Each member of the Connections team is trained and certified as a Validation Associate, ensuring dementia care is delivered with consistency, compassion and respect for every individual.
